RTFC - 16 Vs Mansions - 3

With only 5 men available to play, harsh weather and giant opponents, things were looking bleak for Romford Town on another action packed Wednesday night.

Courage, looks and pure, white hot Jones determination kept the Towners in good stead as the game began promisingly when the Towners took the lead early on.  Towners hitman Stevey Hammond found the back of the net with a fine finish and so began an excellent nights football for the Towners.

DMK was on fire especially when he run wide with the ball as he came forward, applying a quick finish down low at the keepers left to begin his tally on the scoresheet.  Hard work and excellent Towner communication kept the Towners moving and playing good football, passing especially on top when the 50-50's were won and interceptions made.  Plenty of wide play and excellent running allowed the Towners to move the ball around swiftly to get into scoring positions and apply the finish.

Towners resident absentee Christopher Terwillager Jones made an inspiring comeback into the fray to take up the gloves in goal, replacing regular goalie Mikey Fermin.  Mansions players weren't without their shooting boots and on occasion tested Jones to test the step-in, usually from range.  Jones was equal to everything thrown at him until the Towners defence made their first mistake.

Hammond had the ball rolled out by a powerful (oh those guns) Jones throw to feet and after some fine control steered the ball back to Murrell on the edge of the box.  Murrells good looks made the Towner devotee seem like all looks and no brain when he let the ball slip through his feet, back to Jones resulting in a one outfield player passback.  The following penalty was intially saved by the sizeably pant-wearing Jones only to be deflected out to the Mansion penalty taker who slipped the ball back past a delapedated Honz.

Although the Towners had already stabbed 6 goals past the keeper at the other end, the goal resulted in a short concentration slip and it didn't take long for the lanky opposition to add other to their total.

The cold chill of the night was proving to be an ally for Romford Town as the snow fell onto players who couldn't seek restbite from any sub changes.  The refreshing snow was said to be eaten by Murrell for sustance at some points during the game when a few landed in his continuously open mouth.

John McGhee was on form too, working hard at the back to squash any Mansion attacks.  The McGhee backheel, which in recent weeks had become a laughable gimmick, actually helped the Towners for a change when the Towner hardman employed his silky touch to the ball.  Working tirelessly at the back, then rushing forward to assist in the attacks, McGhee's efforts contributed to the Towners game as he tested the keeper repetatively, eventually paying off when he landed one behind the keeper for the fabled Mansions.

Murrells sturdy play and passing excellence was on top when his finishing lacked several times during the game.  Too much power, not enough accuracy meant the Towners frontman lifted the ball too high or straight at the keeper when bearing down on goal.  Finally, a break came when Murrell slipped his first of the night into the bottom right hand corner.

Even sturdier (bloody hell, use that word anymore and we'll all sound like a bunch of reliable chairs!!!) play by keeper Jones meant only one more slipped beyond the grasp of the injury ravaged player taking tha Mansions final total of the night to 3.

It was McGhee who was to have the last say of the night though as he came forward in the last minute.  The ball was passed into feet and with some fine control and striker instinct McGhee cracked a fine goal into the top right hander corner of the Mansion net to cap an excellent performance by title hopefuls Romford Town.

Player Ratings

DMK - A superb performance by the Towner regular on a night where it was sorely needed.  A final contribution of 6 terrific goals finalised a hard-working and superb effort from Mr Monteith-Knight.

Steve Hammond - A quality night from Hammond and those wonderfeet of his.  5 goals and a solid defensive and attacking display made Steve an excellent candidate for Man of the Match.  Well done to Mr Consistency.

John McGhee - Top effort from McGhee and two top goals from the legend that is.  Deserved the goals, especially the final wonder to cap a fabulous performance.

Chris Jones - Had a brilliant night in goal, saving almost everything that moved.  Saving almost so low that the gograbit website almost had a bit of competition with their low savings on selected electricals.  Some excellent rolling out and verbal control of the defence kept things together.

Rickee Murrell - Scored the hatrick but should of made it more, just lucky he's so goodlooking.
